2022 Construction Safety Week at Odin

May 2-7, 2022

Construction Safety Week is an annual, online awareness campaign inspiring construction safety dialogue within companies. Odin uses this time to discuss safety protocols, as well as educate our team about resources and best practices. Monday’s topic is Heat Stress, Heat Exhaustion, and Heat Stroke.

What to do for heat-related illnesses:
• Call 911 (or local emergency number)
• While waiting for help to arrive:
− Move affected person to a cool, shaded area
− Loosen or remove heavy clothing
− Provide cool (not cold) drinking water
− Fan and mist the person with water

Preventing heat stress:
• Know signs/symptoms of heat-related illnesses and monitor yourself and co-workers
• Block out direct sun or other heat sources
• Use cooling fans/air-conditioning, and rest regularly in shaded areas
• Drink lots of water or fluids with proper electrolyte replacement
• Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothes
• Avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and heavy meals

Tuesday’s topic is Eye Protection. OSHA regulations require workers to wear safety-rated eye protection in the workplace anytime there is a risk of receiving eye injuries such as punctures, abrasions, contusions, or burns as a result of exposure to direct impacts, flying particles, hazardous substances, or harmful light rays. Injuries to the eyes can happen at anytime and usually with little or no warning.

Eyeglasses rated Z87 have been laboratory tested and certified to withstand a wide range of high velocity impacts, lateral/side penetration, corrosion resistance, ignition resistance, dust and splash protection, infrared and ultraviolet light shielding. Other glasses aren’t certified for these protections.
